The Plano Independent School District currently operates three pre-schools, forty-one elementary schools, thirteen middle schools, five high schools, three senior high schools, and six special programs centers. These seventy-one schools are attended by approximately 55,000 students who live in Plano, Allen, Dallas, Murphy, Parker, and Richardson.

Twenty-five of its campuses received exemplary ratings, twenty-two received recognized ratings, eighteen received academically acceptable ratings and six were not rated. The percentage of Plano ISD students passing the 2010-2011 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) was somewhat higher than for all Texas schools.
